Reviewed: Air Jordan 6 Retro "Black/Light Crimson"

Michael won his first championship in the 6. That is the story, and it is a good one, but it is not why this pair is worth the money. It is worth it because it is the best-fitting shoe in the retro line.

The build

Black nubuck across the whole upper, with infrared — Nike calls it light crimson here — on the midsole stripe, the heel tab and the lace lock. Two colours, nothing else. The spoiler heel with its two finger holes is still there, and it is still the most practical detail on any Jordan: it is how you pull them on without crushing the heel.

The clear rubber outsole carries the Jumpman moulded straight into it.

Fit

The 6 has a neoprene inner sleeve, which no other early retro does. It means the shoe wraps the foot rather than clamping it, and it is why people who find the 11 punishing get on fine with this. True to size, and comfortable straight out of the box in a way a 3 or a 4 is not.

Nubuck care

Black nubuck hides scuffs far better than white leather and far worse than smooth leather hides water. Brush it dry, never scrub it wet. The infrared will fade slightly with heavy sun exposure — this is normal on every pair from every year and is not something a shop can prevent.

Who it's for

Almost anyone. Black upper, one accent colour, comfortable, goes with denim and cargo and shorts alike. If you are buying your first pair of retros and you want something you will actually wear rather than admire, start here rather than with the purple 4.
